Rattle made from a coconut with dot painting. Aboriginal art is one of `the oldest continuous art traditions in the world`. It is created by indigenous Australians, the Aborigines, and spans a period from 40,000-year-old rock paintings to today`s modern art based on their traditional culture. They mostly depicted animals and people for both educational and ceremonial purposes. Images were painted and carved on rock, drawn in sand, painted on bodies and tree bark. Aboriginal art encompasses a wide range of media, including painting on bark panels, canvas, wood and stone engraving, sculpture, sand and body painting, the creation of ceremonial garments and the artistic decoration of weapons and tools.
